Chronology
- 1720
There is documentation from 1720 that already defines various types of formations and arboreal and shrub communities. In the deed of purchase of the property in 1879, pine, oak, chestnut, laurel, hazelnut, etc. are already mentioned. All of them were acquired by D. Eugenio Montero Ríos as agricultural land and forest. The garden was created in the middle of the 20th century and brings together species planted since the 19th century (Arboretum).
- 1949
In 1949 the Botanical Garden of the Lourizán Forest and Environmental Research Center (C.I.F.A.L.) was created with the objective of research and experimentation, and at the same time, with a didactic and recreational purpose. The Arboretum is created and numerous species are introduced.
- 1993
In 1993, 91 trees of 47 different species were planted (a minimum of 4 trees per Autonomous Community) with additions in 2000 and 2003.
- Today it is the result of more than 130 years of plantations, care and extensions with more than 1,900 varieties of autochthonous and exotic species, among which those catalogued as singular trees of Galicia stand out: Cedar of Lebanon, Metasequoia glytostroboides (the dawn redwood), Australian Araucaria (130 years old ), Red American Sequoya, Japanese Camellia (dated 1887), Chinese Metasequoya (the oldest in Europe), Alcipreste of Japan (130 years old) etc., in addition to more than 300 varieties of Camellias. The most recent parts of the historic garden are the Community Park, a plot whose purpose is to defend the rights of nature.
