Historical background of the garden
The origins of the property date back to the 15th century, when it was still a farm. In the seventeenth century, King Carlos II created the Marquis of Sierra, granting it to Don Fernando Antonio Pablo Mariño de Lobeira Andrade y Soutomaior, it was renamed the Granja de Sierra or the Pazo de Sierra. In the 18th and 19th centuries the farm was alternating owners (businessmen and merchants). The era of splendour began in 1879 with the purchase of the property by Don Eugenio Montero Ríos, Prime Minister, turning this place into an important forum for political issues (The Treaty of Paris was negotiated here in 1898).
Since 1940 it has been acquired by the Regional Government of Pontevedra and it becomes the Headquarters for Agricultural and Forestry Research Studies, turning the farm into an important collection of forest species. The botanical garden with species from all over the world stands out.
